So Summer Welcome is kind of a big deal. With 249 members in the “I Want to be A 2009 Summer Welcome Leader” facebook group, and only 36 available spots, it doesn’t take much to realize just how competitive the program is. So, when Libby Burkhardt (PC ’06) was not only named a 2008 Summer Welcome Leader, but went on to be selected as one of two student directors for Summer Welcome 2009, we knew that she too, is kind of a big deal.
Libby’s responsibilities included recruiting, interviewing, selecting, hiring, and training the 36 2009 Summer Welcome Leaders, who would go on to meet with nearly every one of the approximately 5,000 incoming freshman. Under Libby’s guidance, they taught the new tigers important lessons, like one should always wear gold to football games and that no one likes KU, and engaged in several unavoidably awkward yet ultimately necessary ice-breaker activities. Libby also made her ADPi sisters proud by giving various presentations during each of the 21 sessions, and planning the overall schedule for the program.
Above, Libby participates in what she describes as a “training session at the Alpine Tower which all of the leaders participated in as a bonding exercise/break from intensive mental training.” The ability to look cute in a harness was an unspoken prerequisite.
Libby, pictured above on the far right in an official looking black polo shirt and khaki skirt ensemble, poses with the 2009 Summer Welcome staff, who, according to facebook, affectionately call themselves SWINE.
